Class 11, now to March 2027
Build the daily drawing habit
Draw for 30 to 45 minutes every day in a cheap A4 sketchbook: people at home, objects on your table, a street, a market. Draw from life, not photos. Try one 'strange viewpoint' drawing a week, such as your room seen by an ant or a ceiling fan, because NID asks exactly this kind of question. Date every page.
Class 11, April to September 2027
Learn to think like a designer
Keep a problem notebook. Each week pick one everyday problem (a crowded bus stop, a school water tap, a grandparent's pill box), list the people who face it, and sketch three or four different solutions with short notes. Visit a local craftsperson, such as a potter or weaver, and draw how they work. Read a newspaper daily for general awareness.
Class 11 and 12, weekends
Work with your hands
Make small models from paper, card, clay, wire, thread and waste material. Try to make something that stands, folds or moves. Mains is a hands-on studio test, and students who have never cut and glued card struggle under time pressure. Photograph each model with a note on what you tried.
Class 12, September to November 2027
Apply and practise the Prelims paper
Apply on admissions.nid.edu before the end-November deadline, and check the fee and category details carefully. Solve the official sample paper under a 3-hour timer. Practise writing short, clear explanations next to your drawings, and practise colouring quickly with pencil colours or pastels.
Class 12, December 2027
Prelims, then switch to studio work
Write Prelims. From January, do not wait for the result: spend three or four days a week on model making, quick sketching and material work, while keeping up with board exam preparation.

Mains preparation
If shortlisted, practise timed studio tasks with given materials and rehearse talking about your own work: why you made it, what went wrong and what you would change. Keep your sketchbooks and models together in case you are asked to show them. Be honest in the in-person test; panels ask about your background and interests, not memorised answers.
This plan is advice from the author, not an official schedule. Adjust it to your school and your pace.
What the exam testsPapers, marks, marking and the syllabus
Stage 1, DAT Prelims: a pen-and-paper test on the same day at all centres, in English only, with questions in text and pictures. It is used only to shortlist; the Prelims score does not carry into the final result. Stage 2, DAT Mains: a Studio Sensitivity Test and an In-Person Sensitivity Test. The final merit list comes from Mains alone. Figures from the 2027-28 handbook unless marked.
- Prelims duration is not in the handbook; it is printed on the admit card. News and coaching sites report 3 hours and 100 marks for the 2026 Prelims (secondary).
- The official B.Des Prelims sample paper on the NID site (labelled 2025) is 100 marks: 15 one-mark and 5 two-mark objective questions (odd one out, cube and paper-folding puzzles, logos, general awareness, colour relations), then drawing and design tasks worth 75 marks, such as four illustrated ideas to settle a quarrel between neighbours over a neem tree, drawing a juice shop from a crow's point of view, a poster, listing user groups who struggle with a train washbasin, and designing a board game from a reading passage.
- Several secondary sources say the 2026 Prelims dropped the objective section and had only drawing and design-thinking questions. The official sample paper still has an objective part, so check the 2028 handbook and the latest sample paper.
- For each category, NID calls 2.5 times the number of seats to Mains (2027-28 handbook).
- Mains, Studio Sensitivity Test: hands-on tasks at an NID campus. Coaching and news sites describe drawing, quick sketching, and model making with given materials (secondary).
- Mains, In-Person Sensitivity Test: a face-to-face assessment. Students who sat it in 2026 describe a conversation about their background, interests, why design, and the work they brought (secondary).
- The weight of each Mains part is 'to be announced later' in the 2027-28 handbook. Careers360 reports 60 per cent studio test and 40 per cent in-person test for B.Des selection (secondary).
- No re-evaluation. Only re-totalling of the Prelims answer book, for a fee of Rs 2,000. NID does not release the question paper or answer key.
- Prelims centres for 2027-28: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jorhat, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi and Patna.
When. Two stages. Prelims is a written test in December; Mains (studio test and in-person test) follows in spring. For the 2027-28 intake, applications run from 10 September to 30 November 2026, Prelims is on Sunday 20 December 2026, and the Prelims result is due on 16 March 2027; Mains dates are 'to be announced' (2027-28 handbook). A Class 11 student today will apply in autumn 2027 and write Prelims in December 2027, in the middle of Class 12.
Syllabus. NID publishes no formal syllabus. The handbook says the tests assess 'knowledge, skills and behavioural abilities'. The official sample paper shows what that means in practice: observation drawing, drawing from an unusual point of view, visual puzzles and 3D visualisation, colour, general awareness of Indian culture, logos and the environment, reading comprehension, and design thinking about real users and everyday problems. Classroom design coaching

Students who want studio practice and model making with materials under supervision, which is hard to recreate alone. It helps most for Mains practice. It helps least if it replaces your own daily drawing.
How to choose a coaching centre
- Ask whether they update their course for NID's changes: Prelims is now only a qualifier, and Mains decides admission.
- Ask how much time goes to hands-on studio and model making, not just paper drawing.
- Ask who reviews your sketchbook, how often, and what the batch size is.
- Get the full fee, instalments and refund policy in writing before paying. The Ministry of Education's 2024 guidelines ask for a written refund policy and pro rata refunds if a student leaves.
- Ask who the counsellor is and where the helpline is displayed, as the Supreme Court's July 2025 directions require for institutions with 100 or more students.
- Remember that most 'coaching vs self-study' articles for design are written by coaching providers.
Red flags
- Guaranteed NID selection or rank promises. The 2024 Ministry of Education guidelines bar these.
- Pressure to pay the full course fee upfront, or a written 'no refund' rule.
- Coaches who teach memorised 'NID answers' or fixed drawing templates. NID's questions change every year and reward your own ideas.
- Mock interviews that script what you should say about yourself. The in-person test looks for honest, curious answers.
- Result claims that cannot be checked, or that count short test-series students as their toppers.
Names families usually consider
- SILICA. Offers 200-hour (one term, 50 classes) and 300-hour (two terms, 75 classes) NID courses at centres in Mumbai, Pune and more than a dozen other cities, plus online coaching. No fee is published. Its NID result figures are self-reported. Source: SILICA NID coaching page (not official)
- BRDS (Bhanwar Rathore Design Studio). Classroom coaching for NID and other design exams. New batches start every Monday, up to 20 seats each. Its page asks for a Rs 10,000 advance booking fee and says the fee is not refundable on cancellation. The full fee is not published. Source: BRDS regular programme page (not official)
- Pahal Design. Online live classes for NID, NIFT, UCEED, CEED and NATA. No fee is published on its online coaching page. Source: Pahal Design online coaching page (not official)

- Listed so you know the names, not ranked or endorsed. Visit, ask the questions above, and compare in writing.
Mocks and the last monthsPractice tests, final months, common mistakes
NID publishes one official B.Des Prelims sample paper on admissions.nid.edu. It does not release past question papers or answer keys; the handbook says the question booklet cannot be shared. There is no official mock for Mains. Past-paper collections sold elsewhere are reconstructed from memory by coaching providers, so treat them as practice, not as the real paper.
- Before Prelims: solve the official sample paper and two or three similar papers under a strict 3-hour timer, including colouring.
- Keep drawing people and places every day. Speed and confidence in quick sketches matter in both stages.
- Right after Prelims, move to studio work: three or four timed model-making sessions a week with paper, card, clay and waste materials.
- Practise explaining your work out loud to a family member in two minutes: what the idea is, who it is for, what you would improve.
- Watch admissions.nid.edu every week for Mains dates and centres, and download your score card within the 20 days it stays online.
Common mistakes
- Preparing only for Prelims. Prelims only gets you to Mains; Mains decides the seat.
- Copying drawing styles from coaching sheets. Examiners want original thinking and honest observation.
- Never having made anything with your hands before the studio test.
- Treating the in-person test as a formal interview with memorised answers.
- Relying on fake NID websites. NID says only nid.edu and admissions.nid.edu are official.
Who can sitAttempts, age, marks and subjects
- Any stream: Science, Arts, Commerce or Humanities, from any recognised board (2027-28 handbook).
- Class 12 students can apply in their Class 12 year, but must pass Class 12 in the first attempt and submit the marksheet by the date NID sets (15 July 2027 for the 2027-28 intake). A compartment or supplementary result cancels the admission and the fees are forfeited.
- Age for 2027-28: General and General-EWS born on or after 1 July 2006; OBC-NCL, SC and ST born on or after 1 July 2003; PwD born on or after 1 July 2001.
- The handbook states no limit on the number of attempts and no minimum Class 12 percentage.
- One application covers all NIDs. Application fee for 2027-28: Rs 3,000 for General, General-EWS and OBC-NCL; Rs 2,000 for female candidates (except SC, ST and PwD); Rs 1,500 for SC and ST; Rs 500 for PwD and third gender. Not refundable.
- Seats are few. At NID Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru the integrated programme has 15 disciplines of 9 seats each, including Animation Film Design and Film and Video Communication at Ahmedabad. NID Assam has an intake of 75. The other NIDs list their seats on their own websites.
