What it is really like

At 6 am at NDA, cadets are on parade, paid to learn. An actuary prices insurance risk, passing exams while working for four to six years or more. Company secretaries keep firms within company law. Officers lead in uniform or at sea; pilots train, then wait for an airline job.

Top colleges and what it takes

These careers run through their own national bodies rather than college cut-offs. NDA is decided by a UPSC written exam (900 marks) plus a 5-day SSB interview (900 marks); the Navy and Army 10+2 technical entries shortlist on the JEE Main rank and then run an SSB. The merchant navy runs through IMU-CET, actuarial science through ACET, company secretary through CSEET and cost accountancy through CMA Foundation.
