Which stream should I choose?
For Class 9 and 10. Start from what you want to become, or from what you enjoy.
The rules, in plain words
If you remember one thing: when unsure, keep Maths.
What a stream really isCBSE has no fixed streams
You choose subjects, not a stream
In CBSE you take English or Hindi, then four more subjects: a second language or electives, from one open list. "PCM", "PCB", "Commerce" and "Humanities" are only common mixes of those electives.

Only three pairs are not allowed
Mathematics with Applied Mathematics; more than one of Computer Science, Informatics Practices and IT; Business Studies with Business Administration. Everything else, including PCMB, is allowed by the board. Your school decides which mixes it can timetable.

A 6th subject is allowed
You may take one extra elective. If you fail one of your main five, the 6th can replace it. This is the easiest way to keep Maths without changing your whole stream.

Ask your school in writing
Schools set their own seats and cut-offs for each subject mix. Ask which mixes they offer and the rule for each before you decide.
Maths, Applied Maths and why Maths mattersThe one subject that keeps the most options open
Maths keeps the most options open
Engineering, architecture, Air Force and Navy (each with Physics), and Economics (Hons) and BMS at Delhi University all need Mathematics. If you are unsure, keep Maths, even as a 6th subject.
Applied Maths is not the same
Applied Mathematics counts as Maths for commerce and humanities courses such as DU Economics (Hons), BMS and B.Com (Hons). It does not count for engineering, Mathematics or physical science degrees. You cannot take both.

Computer Science or Informatics Practices
You can take only one. Neither is needed for engineering. Either can be the third subject for B.Arch.

Can I change my mind later?Partly, and it depends on the course
In Class 11
Only until your school sends its Class 11 registration to CBSE, usually in the first term. After that, CBSE does not allow a subject change except when you change school.

After Class 12
You can add up to four subjects through NIOS, and you get a mark sheet. NEET accepts Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English added this way. Delhi University can count a subject from a second board for its subject rules. JEE Advanced does not: PCM must be in your first Class 12 attempt.

So decide the hard part now
If engineering or a Maths-based degree is even possible, take Maths now. Adding Biology later is easier than adding Maths later.
Myths that push students into the wrong streamWhat the rules actually say
"Science is for toppers"
Many strong careers take any stream: law (CLAT), design (UCEED), CA, management (IPM), hotel management and the Army through NDA.
"Humanities is for weak students"
Humanities leads to law, civil services preparation, psychology, economics, journalism, design and teaching. Choose it for what you enjoy, not as a fallback.
"Commerce means Maths"
Not always. Delhi University B.Com (Hons) accepts Accountancy in place of Maths, and CA names no stream. But Economics (Hons) and BMS need Maths or Applied Maths.

"Take PCMB to keep everything open"
With English it is a normal five-subject choice, and it does keep both medicine and engineering open. But it is the heaviest load, with NEET and JEE both to prepare for. Take it only if you really want both; otherwise PCM or PCB alone leaves you more time.

"My friends are taking it"
You will study these subjects every day for two years. Pick what you enjoy and are good at, then check it keeps your goal open.
