Law vs Management

Cost, entrance and pay side by side, and who each one suits better.

By . Last reviewed .

Which suits whom

A five-year BA LLB through CLAT costs about 8 lakh in total at NALSAR and over 20 lakh at the costliest National Law Universities. Management offers a five-year IPM at the IIMs, at about 3 to 13 lakh or more a year, or a three-year BMS or BBA, with Delhi University’s BMS at about 1.08 lakh a year at DDUC. Law suits students who enjoy reading closely and arguing a point in writing; management suits those comfortable with the maths-heavy IPMAT who want a business career.

Good fit if

Law

you enjoy reading long texts closely and arguing a point in writing; you follow the news and like debating it; you can handle long hours and heavy reading for five years; you are open to either a law firm or a court career

Management

you are strong at maths and sure about business; you enjoy leading groups and speaking up

Think twice if

Law

you are counting on a top law-firm salary (only a minority get one); a private law school's fees would need a large loan; you dislike public speaking and writing

Management

your board exam marks are below 60 per cent, or the fee means a heavy loan
