How to prepare
NCET
National Common Entrance Test. Run by National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the test on behalf of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE); each university or institute runs its own admission and merit list.
- The exam
- A computer-based test of 3 hours. You attempt 160 of 181 multiple-choice questions across six papers: two languages, three domain subjects, the General Test and Teaching Aptitude.
- Opens
- NCET is the entrance test for the four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP), a dual-major degree (B.A.
Your plan, step by step
Class 11, now to March 2027
Decide your second major and stage
ITEP is a dual major: Education plus one subject you will teach, at a school stage (foundational, preparatory, middle or secondary). Look at the NCET 2026 list of institutions and note two or three near you, the degree they offer (B.A., B.Sc. or B.Com. B.Ed.) and the subjects they want. Keep your school marks up, because most listed programmes ask for 50 per cent in Class 12.
Class 11, April to September 2027
Build the base in your domain subjects
Your three domain papers follow the Class 12 syllabus, so steady school study is NCET preparation. Make short notes from NCERT chapters as you finish them. Read a newspaper for 20 to 30 minutes a day for the General Test, and practise one language passage a few times a week in each of your two chosen languages.
Class 12, October 2027 to January 2028
Add Teaching Aptitude and the General Test
Download the Teaching Aptitude syllabus and go unit by unit. Read the NEP 2020 summary, learn what the RTE Act 2009, DIKSHA, SWAYAM and NISHTHA are, and read short pieces on Gandhi, Tagore, Savitribai Phule and Gijubhai Badheka. Spend 20 minutes a day on arithmetic and reasoning. Solve an official past NCET paper untimed to see the question style.
Class 12, February to March 2028
Apply, then finish boards
Watch exams.nta.nic.in/ncet for the bulletin. In 2026 the form was open only from 12 February to 10 March, during board exams, so keep your documents and photo ready early. Choose the medium, two languages and three domain subjects that match your target universities. Then give your full attention to boards.
After boards to exam day (April 2028, expected)
Timed practice
Do full 3-hour mocks on a computer, choosing which 3 questions in each paper to skip. With minus 1 for a wrong answer, leave out questions you cannot narrow down. Revise current affairs from the last six months and your Teaching Aptitude notes.
After the result
Apply to each university
NTA only publishes your NCET score. Each university announces its own counselling or admission schedule and merit list, so check the websites of every university you want and apply to each one on time.
This plan is advice from the author, not an official schedule. Adjust it to your school and your pace.
What the exam testsPapers, marks, marking and the syllabus
A computer-based test of 3 hours. You attempt 160 of 181 multiple-choice questions across six papers: two languages, three domain subjects, the General Test and Teaching Aptitude. Each right answer gets 4 marks and each wrong answer loses 1. (NCET 2026 Information Bulletin, NTA.)
- Language 1 and Language 2: 23 questions each, attempt 20. Choose any two different languages from a list of 38. Tested through reading comprehension, literary aptitude and vocabulary.
- Three domain subjects: 28 questions each, attempt 25. Choose three of 26 subjects (such as Physics, History, Mathematics, Accountancy), as asked by the university you want. Based on the Class 12 syllabus only.
- General Test (compulsory): 28 questions, attempt 25. General knowledge, current affairs, mental ability, numerical ability, basic maths applied to problems, and logical reasoning.
- Teaching Aptitude (compulsory): 23 questions, attempt 20.
- In total, 160 questions to attempt out of 181, so 640 marks at most. Every paper gives you a choice of 3 questions to skip.
- Marking: plus 4 for a right answer, minus 1 for a wrong answer, 0 for a question left blank or only marked for review.
- Duration 180 minutes. PwD and PwBD candidates eligible for a scribe get 20 extra minutes for each hour.
- The paper is offered in 13 mediums: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. You choose the medium in the form and cannot change it later. If a translation is unclear, the English version is final.
- When the test runs in more than one shift, raw marks are converted to an NTA Score, and raw marks are not given out. The score is valid for one admission year only.
When. Usually April, for admission in the same year. NCET 2026 applications ran 12 February to 10 March 2026, and the test was held on 17 and 18 April 2026 in three shifts (NTA bulletin and result notice, 2026). NCET 2027 is not on NTA's calendar yet, which so far runs only to March 2027 (checked October 2026). A student now in Class 11 will write NCET 2028, expected around April 2028 at the end of Class 12; its date is not announced.
Syllabus. Languages are tested through reading comprehension, literary aptitude and vocabulary. Domain subjects follow the Class 12 syllabus only, so your NCERT books are the base. The General Test covers general knowledge, current affairs, mental ability, numerical ability, basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and statistics, logical reasoning, and general science and environment literacy. Teaching Aptitude has ten units, from the Indian education system, learner diversity, teaching methods, assessment and classroom management, to NEP 2020, the RTE Act 2009, ICT schemes such as DIKSHA and SWAYAM, and the ideas of thinkers such as Gandhi, Tagore, Savitribai Phule and Gijubhai Badheka. NTA publishes a separate syllabus PDF for each of the 66 subjects.

Online test series
varies
Students who want timed computer-based mocks with the NCET mix of six papers, especially for Teaching Aptitude, which school does not cover.
Online course
varies
Students who want structured Teaching Aptitude and General Test classes. It helps least when it takes time away from Class 12 subjects, which carry three of the six papers.
How to choose a coaching centre
- Ask whether the mocks follow the current NCET pattern: two languages, three domain subjects, General Test and Teaching Aptitude, with 3 questions to skip in each paper.
- Ask whether they cover your languages and domain subjects, not just English and science.
- Get the full fee and a written refund policy before paying. The Ministry of Education's 2024 guidelines ask centres to publish fees and refund pro rata if a student leaves.
- Check that class timings do not clash with school. CBSE enforces 75 per cent attendance for board eligibility.
Red flags
- A guaranteed seat at an IIT, NIT or RIE. Each university makes its own merit list.
- Claims of 'leaked' or 'expected' questions.
- Pressure to pay the full fee upfront, or no refund policy in writing.
- Advice to skip school or join a 'dummy' school. Your Class 12 marks decide eligibility, and most listed programmes ask for 50 per cent.

Mocks and the last monthsPractice tests, final months, common mistakes
Official: NTA publishes administered NCET question papers on nta.ac.in, for example the 9 August 2023 English session paper, and NCET 2024 papers in several mediums. NTA also lists a free computer-based mock for NCET on nta.ac.in/Quiz to practise the test screen. After each exam NTA shows the question paper and your responses during the answer-key challenge window. Paid test series from private providers are optional; check they follow the 181-question, attempt-160 pattern.
- Write full 3-hour mocks on a computer, in the medium you chose.
- In every paper, decide quickly which 3 questions to skip. Do not answer all 23 or 28 questions just because you can.
- Guess only when you can rule out at least two options. Each wrong answer costs 1 mark, a quarter of a right one.
- Revise current affairs from the last six months and your Teaching Aptitude notes on NEP 2020, RTE and ICT schemes.
- Keep the admit card, ID and photo ready the day before. If you have two shifts, check both times on the admit card.
Common mistakes
- Choosing domain subjects that do not match what your target university asks for.
- Ignoring Teaching Aptitude because school does not teach it. It is compulsory: 20 of the 160 questions you attempt.
- Letting Class 12 marks slip. Most listed programmes ask for 50 per cent in aggregate.
- Missing the short application window. In 2026 it was open less than a month, during board exams.
- Thinking NTA will allot a seat. You must apply to each university's own admission process after the result.
Who can sitAttempts, age, marks and subjects
- No age limit to sit NCET (bulletin 2026). A university can still set its own age rule for admission.
- You must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent, or be appearing in the Class 12 exam in the same year. Equivalents include NIOS with at least five subjects, a two-year intermediate or pre-university course, and HSC vocational.
- Admission rules belong to each university. The NCET 2026 programme-wise eligibility list asks for a Class 12 pass with at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate at the institutions it lists; check your university's row and website for any relaxation and for the subjects it needs.
- Each university also says which three domain subjects and which languages you must take for its programme. Pick your NCET subjects to match the universities you want, or you may not be considered.
- Application fee 2026: Rs 1,200 for General; Rs 1,000 for OBC-NCL and EWS; Rs 650 for SC, ST, PwD, PwBD and third gender candidates. Bank charges and GST are extra.
- Only one application per candidate. Multiple forms lead to cancellation of the result.
- Reservation, quotas and counselling follow the rules of each university or institute. NTA only runs the test and has no role in the merit list.
